1. Abiola's family seeks ex-President status for him.
The Head of Abiola family in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Chief Olanrewaju Abiola, has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari to actualise the mandate that Nigerians gave to the late Chief Moshood Abiola on June 12, 1993, by conferring an official status of an ex-President of the country on him.
Olanrewaju also asked that all the entitlements that should have accrued to his late brother from 1993 to date should be paid to the family.
He made the demand at the family house in Abeokuta on Friday, advising Buhari to liaise with the National Assembly to debate the issue and subsequently pass it into law.
He said recognising the late breadwinner of the family as an ex-president had become necessary for Nigerian leaders to govern in peace.
He said, "The spirit of MKO is still hovering around Aso Rock and will not rest until his mandate is actualised."
2. Health workers to receive Covid-19 hazard allowances and life insurance next week - Minister of health has said.
The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has said the Federal Government has concluded plans for medical workers on the front line of the coronavirus outbreak to receive hazard allowances and life insurance coverage next week.
Ehanire, who spoke during a special live programme of Channels Television in commemoration of Democracy Day, on Friday, stated that efforts were made to ensure that health workers were protected and incentivised.
The minister noted that the Federal Government was conscious of the need to make personal protective equipment available for medical professionals treating COVID-19.
3. I will do my best to sustain Nigeria's democracy - Orji Uzor Kalu says.
The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu has said that he will do his utmost best to ensure the sustainance of Nigeria’s democracy.
Kalu stated this on Friday while reminiscing on the labour of past heroes on the occasion of the 2020 Democracy Day celebrations on Twitter.
He tweeted, "As we commemorate and celebrate the remembrance of Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and other heroes of our hard-fought democracy, I want to assure all Nigerians that I would do my best to ensure its sustenance."
4. Four Labourers in Lagos State has been arrested for allegedly poisoning co-worker's drink.
The police in Lagos State have arrested four labourers in connection with the death of their co-worker, Godwin Udoh, who died of poison.
The suspects, identified simply as Moses, Lekan, Clement and Kehinde, allegedly replaced the content of a bitter drink Udoh was taking with a chemical which he unknowingly drank.
Until his death, Udoh lived on Taiye Olorunfunmi Street, along Idimu-Ejigbo Road, Lagos.
It was learnt that they invited the 25-year-old Udoh to do a clean-up work at a newly rented apartment on a neighbouring street.
The deceased, who was an electrician, was said to have accepted the offer so he could have some money to make ends meet.
While they were working, Udoh reportedly treated himself to a bottle of bitter drink which he was taking at intervals.
By the time he wanted to take the remaining drink, it was said to have been replaced with the chemical they reportedly used to clean tiles in the apartment.
He was rushed to a hospital and gave up the ghost some hours later.
5. Oil producing states got 44trillion Naira in 18 years - HOSTCON reveals.
Host Communities of Nigeria (HOSTCON) has revealed that a total of 44trillion accrued to states in the Niger Delta region through the 13 per cent derivation fund in the last 18 years, the Host Communities of Nigeria has said.
HOSTCON, an organisation for oil and gas producing communities, lamented that the 44trillion Naira that was paid to states in the oil-rich region had not impacted positively on the lives of citizens in the affected communities.
The group’s National Director, Media and Publicity, Okakuro Monday, said in a statement that paying the derivation fund through state governors was not in accordance with the country’s 1999 Constitution as amended.
He argued that this was partly responsible for the poor usage of the funds, stressing that the N44tn had not resulted in commensurate infrastructural development in the region.
6. Federal Government's Sukuk bond has been oversubscribed by 519.12billion Naira.
The Federal Government’s Sovereign Sukuk bond of N150n offered to investors was oversubscribed by 519.12billion Naira, the Debt Management Office has said.
The DMO said on Friday in a statement that the offer attracted a total subscription of 669.12billion Naira, representing a subscription level of 446 per cent.
It said it allotted 162.557billion Naira to investors in the third Sovereign Sukuk.
The debt office said the high demand for the bond came from a wide range of investors, including ethical funds, insurance companies, fund managers and retail investors.
The statement said the participation by a wide range of investors was in line with the DMO’s objectives of diversifying the investor base for government securities and promoting financial inclusion.
