1. Edo PDP Primaries: Court strikes out suit to stop Obaseki from contesting
Justice Emmanuel Obile of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has struck out an application by a Governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihiama seeking to stop Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in the party primaries scheduled for Thursday.
Justice Obile struck out the suit after all the parties in the matter agreed to resolve their issues.
2. Osinbajo unhappy with poor publicity on govt. intervention in tertiary institutions
Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has expressed displeasure over the lip service being paid to publicizing government’s intervention in tertiary institutions by the management of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND.
The Vice President’s reaction was revealed by the executive secretary of TETFUND, Professor Sulieman Bogoro, in Abuja at the 2020 inaugural retreat on a research grant.
The TETFUND also disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari and the board of trustees of the TETFUND gave approval for the setting up of a National COVID-19 research and development centre as well as 12 COVID-19 testing centres across the country, among other research-related interventions
3. Institute of soil science rolls out plan to address challenges in food production
The Nigeria Institute of Soil Science has rolled out a five-year strategic action plan geared towards addressing the challenges of soil and accelerate increase in food production in the country.
The Action Plan which implementation is to commence June 2020 to June 2025, is categorized into five (5) Thematic Areas for effective, efficient coordination and monitoring.
According to the Registrar of the institute, Prof. Victor Chude the move is to protect the soil, promote sustainable soil management, tackle the challenges of soil degradation, and ultimately achieve food and nutrition security in Nigeria.
The plan is as follows: To promote sustainable management of soil resources for soil protection, conservation and sustainable productivity; encourage investment, technical cooperation, policy, education, awareness and extension in the soil.
4. Nigeria will not fight Ghana Over Demolition – Presidency
The Presidency says Nigeria will not engage Ghana in a fight over the demolition of some apartments under construction in the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana’s capital, Accra.
President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana had called President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, to tender apologies for the demolition of a building on the premises of Nigerian High Commission in Accra, Ghana.
Akufo-Addo had informed President Buhari that he has directed full scale investigation into the incident
5. Enugu grants tax relief to residents
The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has granted tax relief and other incentives to taxpayers in the state.
This decision was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Emeka Odo, who noted that the move is part of efforts to to reduce the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on residents,
According to Odo, the Enugu Government since the beginning of the Ugwuanyi-led administration in May 2015, had waived payment of Personal Income Tax as well as Market Tax, for all traders selling in the major markets.
Odo said the waiver was part of the administration’s pro-poor policies, and that it will remain in force and sustained till the end of Ugwuanyi’s tenure.
6. ‘I represent the good, the bad and the ugly’, Ndume on why he’s standing surety for Maina
A former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, has confirmed his acceptance to stand as surety for the ex- chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina.
Ndume, who is currently the chairman, Senate Committee on Army, said he was not only representing the good, but also the bad and ugly.
Maina is currently facing trial over alleged money laundering and has been unable to fulfill his bail conditions, which include getting a senator to stand as his surety.
Maina’s lawyer on Tuesday told a Federal High Court in Abuja that Ndume had agreed to stand as his client’s surety.
Confirming the development when he spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, Ndume, who represents Borno South at the Senate said, “It took me over six months to agree to be his surety” since his bail condition required a serving senator.
7. NAF destroys 10 armed bandits’ camps in 4 Northwest states — Air Chief
Chief of Air Staff (CoAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, says Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has destroyed 10 bandits’ camps in four states in the North-West zone in the ongoing ‘Operation Wutar Daji’.
Abubakar disclosed this on Tuesday in Katsina when he inspected the operations which had been on for the last one month.
He explained that NAF deployed 10 aircrafts with dozens of Special Forces for the operations.
The air chief stated that in the course of air surveillance, the force identified and bombed several armed bandits’ camps across four states.
He said the states included Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna and Kebbi in the North West Zone where the operation is ongoing.
According to him, 10 jets were used in the operations where the hideouts of the armed bandits terrorising communities in Rugu, Kuyanbana, Birnin Gwari and Dansadau forests within the zone were destroyed.
