1. Resident Doctors suspend Nationwide Strike.
The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), has announced the suspension of its strike which will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2020.
The organisation said it took the decision in order to enable the government time to fulfill outstanding demands following an appeal by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and other stakeholders.
NARD made the announcement in a communique read to journalists by its President, Dr. Aliyu Sokomba, today being Sunday in Abuja after its National Executive Council meeting attended by over 300 members.
2. Ogun State Police warns Pastors and Imams against re-opening of Churches and Mosques in the State.
The Ogun State Police Command says it has received an intelligence report that some religious leaders are planning to reopen places of worship in defiance to the state government directives.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
The police warning came on the heels of the state government’s suspension of its plan to reopen the religious centres due to the rising cases of COVID-19.
Oyeyemi said, "In view of this, the command wishes to appeal to those who have such intention to have a rethink in their own interests because such an action will be viewed as deliberately making an attempt to cause a widespread of the virus in the state.
As a responsible organisation constitutionally mandated to maintain peace and order, the police will not fold its hands while some people will be openly flouting the law of the land."
3. You can't confuse our party like you did to PDP - APC tells Fayose.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused the former governor of the state and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Ayodele Fayose, of making attempts to destabilise the ruling APC as he allegedly did to his party.
The APC State Director of Media, Sam Oluwalana, who alleged that Fayose was hobnobbing with some APC leaders but making uncomplimentary remarks in public, said his sinister motive of confusing party members would not work.
Oluwalana, in a statement entitled, 'Fayose is a chameleon', reacted to the former PDP governor’s claim that the crisis rocking the governing party was an indication that God was visiting the APC with anger and that more confusion would come.
He advised Fayose to leave the party alone and stop his divisive tendencies.
He described the former governor as "a type of politician that will do or say anything just to attract attention."
Oluwalana stated, "He thinks he can cause confusion in the APC as he has done to his party, unknown to him that he is dealing with more mature politicians."
4. Nigeria will witness rise in hypertension, obesity and diabetes cases - Health experts warns.
Public health and nutrition experts have warned of an impending rise in the incidence of obesity hypertension and diabetes in the coming months as a result of the lifestyle of many Nigerians during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The experts, Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, the Vice-Chancellor, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State and Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist, Cynthia Onyekwere, said many Nigerian will come down with these conditions because of their dietary habits and lack of physical exercise in this period of the viral pandemic.
According to Onimawo, who is a professor of public health nutrition, the COVID-19 pandemic will worsen obesity in the country as many people now consume more foods while working from home and engaging less in physical activities.
Prof. Onimawo, said the increase in obesity will also trigger a rise in non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases.
5. Nigerian Government condemns the attack on it's Embassy in Ghana.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned what it terms 'attacks' on a residential building within it's diplomatic premises in Ghana.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed the Federal Government’s displeasure in a series of tweets posted on his timeline on Sunday.
Onyeama’s tweets come on the heels of several reports that buildings at the diplomatic premises were brought down by a bulldozer late Friday, June 19, following claims by a businessman who said he owned the piece of land where the Nigerian High Commission’s staff quarters was erected.
In reaction, Mr Oyeama condemned the attack and urged the Ghanaian government to take precise actions against the perpetrators of the attacks on his Twitter account.
6. Federal Government has paid 55,031 health workers 4.6billion Naira hazard allowances - Lai Mohammed has disclosed.
The Federal Government has said that a total of 55,031 health workers in 35 COVID-19 designated hospitals and medical centres have been paid special hazard allowances totalling 4,642,485,146.00 Naira as of Sunday.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this at a press conference he addressed in Abuja on Sunday shortly before the National Association of Resident Doctors suspended its strike, which he described as inexplicable.
Lai Mohammed was joined at the press conference by the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire; and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.
He said the government had also paid 9billion Naira as premium for Group Life Insurance to all health workers.
Lai Mohammed said that the payment of COVID-19 special hazard inducement allowances was based on four templates; 50 per cent of Consolidated Basic Salary to all workers in COVID-19 designated hospitals and centres, 40 per cent of Consolidated Basic Salary to health workers in non-COVID-19 designated centres and hospitals, 10 per cent of Consolidated Basic Salary to non-health professionals engaged in those centres, and 20 per cent of Consolidated Basic Salary special allowance to all health workers directly managing COVID-19 patients in Treatment and Isolation Centres.
7. Ondo deputy Governor dumbs APC and joins APC.
The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, has on Sunday, resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Apoi Ward 2, Ese Odo Local Government Area of the State.
This came some hours after he was restrained from going out of the Government House in Alagbaka, Akure, the state capital, by the state Police Commissioner, Bolaji Salami and his team
Tendering his resignation letter at the APC secretariat in Apoi Ward 2, Ese Odo LGA, Ajayi said everybody knew why he left the APC.
Shortly after resigning from APC, Ajayi went to the secretariat of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the ward where he announced his defection to the party and obtained his party card.
8. Northerners wasted votes on Buhari - Abubakar says while reacting to the Zamfara attacks.
As bandits attacked and killed not fewer than 15 persons in Dansadau community of Zamfara state this weekend, Murtala Abubakar of the Coalition Against Killings in Northern Nigeria (CAKIN), has said that Northerners wasted their votes in electing President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said; "This is because they thought his administration could defeat Boko Haram and banditry."
This was coming on the heels of an assertion by the NSA, retired Major Gen. Monguno that no President in Nigeria had ever spent money on the purchase of arms like President Buhari.
