No doubt, Mr. Godwin Obaseki is moving to the opposition party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) because he has been denied and denounced by his own All Progresives Congress (APC) over an unresolved acrimony between him and the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomole.
Obaseki wants to return to power in the October governorship election in Edo State. He has started lobbying the party stalwarts in the PDP and soon he will announce his move to the opposition party that has even signaled its readiness to welcome him.
But there are some influential people in the PDP whose support Obaseki needs. The people have to strongly back Obaseki if he will emerge victorious again in the election scheduled for October.
Here are the four people:
1. Goodluck Jonathan
Jonathan is the immediate past president of the country and the last PDP president. He left office in 2015 to hand over to the incumbent, Buhari.
Former President Jonathan is still revered and popular in the country and in Edo State where his fans often troop out to support whatever he says. The president is one of the most loved Nigerian president because of his approach to issues and his moderate ambition.
Apart from that, the former president is a leader in the PDP across the country. His voice is feared and obeyed by the members of the party including the party chieftains. Jonathan can help Obaseki get a good deal I the PDP and mobilise supports both in and outside Edo State. That is the fact.
Recently, Jonathan said he would be retiring from the active politics. He has his decision, but it is not yet time to leave the party that made him. He will still fight for and solicit for the party.
2. Atiku Abubakar
This is the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party in the 2019 presidential election. He is from Adamawa, but his influence and popularity transcends the northeastern state.
Atiku Abubakar slightly won the Presidential election in Edo State to beat Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progresives Congress (APC). Even with Adams Oshiomole as the national chairman of the party, Atiku Abubakar was still able to get enough votes in Edo State.
As a result of this, he has power to convince voters in Edo State to cast their votes for Obaseki. He has the same structure he uses in the state.
Besides, Atiku Abubakar is wealthy, he can assist Obaseki with much needed funds. Soon, the APC-controlled federal government may stop the allocation to Edo State because of reasons known to everybody. Atiku Abubakar will be ready to assist Obaseki.
3. Prince Uche Secondus
The prince is the national chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure has been smooth and undisturbed. There are very few skirmishes in his administration and this is an evidence he knows what it takes to rule a party with diverse interests and factions .
Mr. Obaseki needs Secondus for the PDP ticket. He needs to ensure the party authority grant him waiver to contest barely four months to the election.
Also, it is Secondus who will pull other party forces in Edo State together to pave the way for Obaseki.
4. Nyesom Wike
Obaseki has already visited the Rivers State governor in Port Harcourt. He has consulted him and it all seems Wike has given Obaseki a green light to move into the PDP.
Wike is a strategic politician that Obaseki needs. He has to work with Wike in order to succeed both at the PDP and at the gubernatorial election.
Rivers State and Edo State are two out of the six states in south-south geopolitical zone. Others are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Cross Rivers. Wike is the most popular among the state governors there. He is even the most active and fearless. He can face the federal power.
5. Muhammadu Buhari
Yes, the president is included. The president is the leaders of the APC and he is not expected to support a candidate of the opposition.
Yet he can choose to be neutral and stop the use of federal power. The APC needs federal power to beat Obaseki in the election slated for October this year.
President Muhammadu Buhari refused to intervene in the election that brought in Willie Obiano in Anambra state.
Already, Obaseki has said that he would consult Mr. Buhari before he made his final decision.

So the opposition party defeated Buhari, APC in the presidential elections of 2019 in Edo State. Where then is the huge supporters of Obaseki in Edo State? Or did Obaseki direct his "numerous" supporters to vote for PDP in 2019 as part of his orchestrated moves to demystify Oshiomohle? What moral justification has Obaseki to seek for Buhari's support in 2020 when he (Obaseki) denied Buhari the needed support in 2019?
