1.June 12: Punish IBB, others, Balarabe Musa tells Buhari
A former Governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, has asked the President Muhammadu Buhari, to launch an investigation into the annulment of the 1993 presidential election and punish those responsible for the annulement, including Gen. Ibrahim Babangida ( retd ).
He noted that it was not enough for Buhari to merely declare June 12 as Democracy Day.
The ex -governor said those who annulled the election considered as the freest and fairest poll ever in Nigeri ’s history were responsible for challenges the country is going through today.
Musa spoke on Friday at an event held in his Kaduna residence to mark this year ’ s Democracy Day.
He said it was better for Buhari to investigate and punish those who annulled the election in which the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Abiola, was the acclaimed winner.
2.PDP, Afenifere, Ohanaeze fault Buhari’s Democracy Day speech
The Peoples Democratic Party, Yoruba socio -cultural organisation, Afenifere, and the Igbo group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Friday faulted some of the claims made by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .), in his nationwide Democracy Day broadcast to the nation.
The spokesmen of the PDP and the two groups, faulted Buhari’ s claim on the insecurity being witnessed in parts of the country.
Buhari had in the broadcast attributed the renewed killings witnessed in Katsina and Borno states this week to the restrictions imposed to curtail the spread of COVID - 19.
3.Edo gov poll: PDP opens door as Obaseki loses APC ticket
Following his disqualification by the All Progressives Congress, there are indications that the embattled Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, may consider running on the platform of another political party to realise his second -term ambition,Saturday PUNCH has learnt.
The screening committee of the party, headed by Prof Jonathan Ayuba, while presenting the committee’s report to the party’ s National Working Committee, said the governor was disqualified from participating in the party’s June 22 primary because of the discrepancies in his names and certificates and for taking the party to court in contravention of the party ’s rules.
In the report received by the National Chairman of the party, Mr Adams Oshiomhole , Ayuba noted that Obaseki claimed to have obtained a Higher School Certificate from the Institute of Continuing Education in Benin but that he did not produce the certificate and that the document he produced only attested to his attendance.
He said further that the governor ’s National Youth Service Corps certificate reads ‘Obasek Godwin ’ and that while this could be an error on the part of NYSC , the governor never took any step “ to correct the anomaly."
4.No names dropped from Wadume’s case – Malami
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) has said that no names were dropped in the trial of kidnapping kingpin, Bala Hamisu, also known as Wadume.
In a statement by his media aide, Dr Umar Gwandu on Friday, Malami said the office merely severed the charges in view of the unavailability of the soldiers who in their own case need to be released by the military authorities in view of the fact that they were perhaps undergoing military processes before their release.
5.WHO says mothers should breastfeed even if she has coronavirus
A mother should breastfeed her newborn baby even if she has a suspected or confirmed case of the new coronavirus, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday.
“Based on the available evidence, WHO’s advice is that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks of transmission of COVID-19,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press briefing.
